SATA BGA SSD · Extreme — Sold-Down Storage for Compact Industrial PCs

Scene
A compact industrial PC sits in a sealed outdoor cabinet beside a fence line, three hours from the nearest service van. Inside, the board boots Windows IoT from a BGA-mounted SSD, runs SCADA software, and writes sensor logs to disk continuously. The temperature inside that cabinet swings from -25°C in winter to 60°C in summer. Vibration from passing trucks shakes the cabinet daily.
The SSD is a solder-down component — replacing it means a board-level repair, which means a truck visit, a technician, and a day of downtime. The storage must be dependable for the life of the product, typically 10 to 15 years. Consumer SSDs, M.2 modules with connectors, or even 2.5″ SATA drives with cables are not an option — vibration loosens connectors, and the board simply does not have a standard drive bay.
Why SATA BGA SSD Fits Compact Industrial PCs
A BGA SSD is soldered directly onto the PCB. There is no connector to loosen, no cable to fray, no drive bay to fill. The storage is part of the board, and that is exactly what you need when the machine is installed in a place nobody wants to open.
SATA III (6 Gb/s) is the right protocol for most compact-PC workloads — log writing, OS boot, application execution — without the higher cost and board-complexity of PCIe NVMe. Sequential read up to 450 MB/s and write up to 350 MB/s are sufficient for Windows IoT, Linux-based HMIs, and most embedded controllers. The SATA interface also means the SSD works with virtually any industrial motherboard that provides a SATA port, even older ones that predate NVMe.
The temperature grade is the differentiator. Consumer BGA SSDs are rated for 0°C to 70°C. Inside a sealed outdoor cabinet, the ambient alone is not the problem — the cabinet traps heat in summer and cold in winter. A -40°C to +85°C wide-temperature SSD ensures the drive starts up reliably after a cold night and continues to function when the internal temperature climbs.
Vibration resistance is another critical factor. The FBGA156 package with solder bumps eliminates mechanical failure points that plague connector-based solutions. In applications where the equipment moves — vehicle-mounted controllers, mobile measurement systems, or portable test equipment — the solder-down form factor provides mechanical reliability that no card edge connector can match.
The Loongtion SATA BGA SSD Option
Loongtion offers two grades of SATA BGA SSD for embedded systems:
Wide-temp (industrial) — FBGA156 package, 16.0 mm × 20.0 mm × 1.9 mm. -40°C to +85°C. TLC NAND, capacities from 128 GB to 1 TB (YIDN128SKT-S through YIDN01TSKT-S). Sequential read 450 MB/s, write 350 MB/s. Pin-to-pin compatible with Phison PSS5A324-X28 and other legacy uSSD chips. 5-year warranty, minimum 5-year supply with 12-month EOL notice.
Extreme-temp (military / GJB-standard) — FBGA156 package, same footprint. -55°C to +95°C. pSLC NAND, capacities from 32 GB to 256 GB. LDPC ECC, full S.M.A.R.T. and Trim support. Compatible with VxWorks, Linux, Windows NT/XP. Environmental testing and reliability meet relevant specification requirements. 5-year warranty.

Selection Notes
Match the temperature grade to the deployment. A factory-floor IPC with climate control may be fine with -40°C to +85°C wide-temp. An outdoor cabinet with no active cooling or a vehicle-mounted unit may need the -55°C to +95°C extreme grade. Size the grade for the worst case, not the best case.
Choose TLC for capacity, pSLC for endurance. If the workload is mostly boot, log writes, and firmware updates, TLC handles it for years. If the PC is a write-heavy node — real-time data logging, continuous telemetry — the pSLC grade provides ~100,000 P/E cycles, roughly 30× TLC endurance.
Verify the ball map before switching vendors. BGA SSDs are soldered; a pin-out mismatch requires a board redesign. Loongtion's wide-temp line is pin-to-pin compatible with Phison PSS5A324-X28 and other common uSSD chips, but always confirm the ball map and firmware behavior on your specific host before committing to a purchase.
Consider the operating system. Loongtion SATA BGA SSDs support Windows IoT, Linux (all major distributions), VxWorks, and other real-time operating systems. If your platform uses a domestic CPU (Loongson, Phytium), the SSD is compatible and has been tested with Kylin and other domestic OSes. MOQ is from 1 pc, so prototype evaluation and repair lots are practical without large inventory lock-in.
Design-in Considerations
When integrating a BGA SSD into a new design, pay attention to thermal management, board layout, and manufacturing process. The FBGA156 package is small (16 mm × 20 mm) but the NAND and controller die underneath need adequate thermal relief on the PCB. Work with your contract manufacturer to ensure the reflow profile meets the SSD manufacturer's specification — thermal stress during soldering is a common failure point for BGA components.
Power consumption of SATA BGA SSDs is typically lower than 2.5″ or M.2 form factors, which matters for compact-PC designs with limited thermal headroom. SATA III's 6 Gb/s bandwidth is also more than adequate for most industrial workloads — you rarely need NVMe speeds for SCADA, HMI, or data-logging applications.
Cross-Reference and EOL Transitions
Many compact-PC designs originally used Phison uSSD chips, Samsung PM893, or Intel S3510 in BGA form. These parts are increasingly reaching EOL. Loongtion's cross-reference database provides verified fit notes for these families:
- Phison PSS5A324-X28 → YIDN128SKT-S · Pin-to-Pin Compatible
- Samsung PM893 → YIDN256SKT-S · Possible Alternative (verify ball map)
- Intel S3510 BGA → YIDN128SKT-S · Possible Alternative
Loongtion's application engineering team supports BOM review and drop-in fit checks at no charge. Firmware and temperature-grade adaptation can also be arranged when the catalog needs a tweak for your specific host platform.
